The autumn trees lose their summer fashions
As the lovely, lonely leaves all fall to the ground
Their children forsake them as chestnuts and acorns lay scattered
And the birds they once called friends are not to be found

Well the frost nips his nose and the wind shakes his head
And the only company is when John and Mary carve their initials on him

Winter has come dressed in reds and greens and gold
And the only decor he dawns are icicles and snow

Can you stay the cold just one more year
And build a ring inside your body and grow your bark a little thicker near
The joints of your limbs
Where the cold creeps in
When the storm sets in
Just dig you roots deep in

Over tie the birds came back a little quicker than the leaves
Until one spring, everything turned green
