about

A while ago, my parents were replacing the carpet in the downstairs of the house I grew up in. It makes sense, since both my brother and sister and I made that carpet look like hell. But it was a little heart-breaking because I could point to marks and stains and places where the carpet had to physically be removed because it looked better to see the concrete beneath it than to see the nastiness of the carpet. I could look at them and remember exactly what happened. In a sense, I felt like some of my childhood memories were being sanitized and sterilized. But then again, I wanted to hold on to this memories because I grew up in a happy house, and that was largely due to the love that my parents filled our house with every day. I wouldn't have wanted to hold on to those memories so dearly if it wasn't for the way that they loved each other and loved us.

This song is how I imagine and exchange would go between two people who love each other like my parents and who also wanted to keep the house the way it was, like I did.

lyrics

Not a Single Thing

Oh, the pores of the wood of our house are filled with song
For each season brought new memories, brought new melodies, new refrains
And the stains on the carpet bookmark the stories we have written
Don’t go changing, don’t go changing
Don’t you change a single thing

Our house ain’t perfect, neither are we
But it’s a journal of our memories
Darling, if you, if you love me
Then don’t you change a thing

You and I, we’ve been scarred, but it’s a testament to who we are
I hope you know that I think you’re beautiful
So don’t you change a thing

Our bodies wear out and will grow thin
That’s what happens when you’re coming from where we’ve been
Darling if you, if you love me
Then don’t you change a thing
